The Area

The Old Rectory Holiday Cottages are located in the heart of Mid-Wales in the county of Ceredigion. The area is a popular holiday destination for travellers from around the globe and the cottages provide the ideal location for a relaxing holiday, weekend break or retreat. In the surrounding area there's always plenty to see and do with activities and attractions to suit the whole family.

Situated in the beautiful Teifi Valley, the holiday cottages are 4 miles from Lampeter a busy, yet small and friendly, market town and home to the oldest university in Wales. During the summer months it hosts the famous Food Festival, Drovers Arts Festival, Carnival and the Rhys Thomas James Eisteddfod.
6 miles to the north lies Tregaron, and just beyond the Cors Caron National Nature Reserve.

Aberaeron Harbour The View

The reserve is the best remaining example of an active raised bog in England and Wales, covering over 800 acres, and is refuge for a wide range of plants, insects, birds and mammals. Cors Caron is owned and managed by the Countryside Council for Wales. Visitors can access the Old Railway Walk and viewing tower at any time, but a permit is needed for other areas.

Aberaeron Harbour Red Kite
One of the area's most spectacular sights is red kite, until recently on the brink of extinction but there are now believed to be over 250 breeding pairs in Mid-Wales, to see them at close quarters visit the Pont Einon Feeding Station at Cors Caron, although they are also regularly seen soaring above the cottages.

In October 2003 Paul Culyer, a countryside warden at Cors Caron, discovered the remains of ancient oaks dating back to the Bronze Age. The trees provide evidence that a dense forest once flourished at the site of the bog and it is thought that the find could provide details of past climate and wildlife and even man's first activity there.

There is a golf course approximately 1.5 miles away. Horse riding, pony trekking and fishing can all be arranged locally, please enquire if you wish to arrange any of these activities.

10 miles away at Pumpsaint is the Dolaucothi Gold Mine belonging to the National Trust. Gold has been mined here since Roman times and now tours can be made of the workings, Welsh gold can be purchased and at varying times special events are held.

Heading north-west to Aberystwyth, another university town and home to the National Library of Wales. The library contains over 4 million printed volumes, from many countries and different periods of history. It houses manuscripts and archives, pictures, posters and ephemera. The library also has radio, TV and sound recordings on every media from wax cylinders to CDs! It is also regarded as the principal centre for researching Welsh genealogy.

From Aberystwyth follow the coast to the bustling holiday resorts of Aberaeron, New Quay and Aberporth. Whether driving or walking along the Heritage Coastal paths you have the chance to experience the sheer beauty of this coastline and see some of the dolphins, seals and other rare animals and birds that inhabit the Bay's sheltering waters.

Rising in the Cambrian Mountains the River Teifi is 75 miles long and passing through Cors Caron (Tregaron Bog). The Teifi has a relatively short tidal section and historically the Teifi has always been a noted salmon river. In recent years it has gained a reputation as a world-class sea trout river. Today the Teifi is arguably the best mixed (salmon, trout and sea trout) game river in Wales.
The Abergwesyn Pass is not for the faint hearted but is well worth the journey. From Tregaron the old drovers road climbs east crossing the remote and beautiful Mynydd Elenydd Range of the Cambrian Mountains, the 14 mile journey is one of Britain's most memorable drives. The single track road winds up through the Brenig valley, passing through a forestry plantation, and emerges into an area of high moorland almost devoid of trees, where one of the only signs of civilisation is a red telephone box. Leaving the moorland the road drops down the 1 in 4 Devils Staircase, with its hairpin bends, into the Irfon valley from where it follows a narrow ledge cut into the side of the mountain to Abergwesyn.
